To begin with, start about all of the good things that have happened to you today. You enjoyed your breakfast, your commute was stress free, and you arrived at work to find your inbox relatively quiet. Sure, you’re still at work, sat next to that annoying co-worker, but don’t think about those things – pick out the positives so that you can start the day feeling grateful for how things are. This positive outlook will stand you in good stead later.
When it comes to making decisions, trust your instincts. If you find yourself spending a lot of time weighing the pros and cons of two decisions, there is a high chance that the two decisions are very similar; so, instead of trying to make the “right” choice where there is none, try to make the choice that will make you happy.
In addition, try to understand the difference between comfort and happiness. Many people who are financially well-off are unhappy and those around them can’t understand why. Financially, those people are comfortable, but their jobs may not stimulate them and they don’t have enough time to pursue the things that they enjoy. Once your basic needs are met, think carefully about how you spend the rest of your time.
One good way to spend your time is to look after your body. Sleep well, eat properly and get lots of exercise. Exercise causes your body to release endorphins which help to improve your mood, making you feel more enthusiasm and excitement. Sleep helps to clear your head and helps increase your energy levels, while eating a healthy diet can lower your risk of depression, dementia and a range of other conditions.
Happiness is as much about your outlook as it is about your status. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that a promotion, pay rise or new relationship would make you happier. True happiness is something that comes from within you.
